A Spring Airlines flight enroute to Tokyo from Shanghai made an emergency landing at Osaka Kansai Airport after suffering a cabin depressurization on 30 June 2025.
Spring Airlines flight JL8696, operated by a Boeing 737-800, was en route to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT). The aircraft was operating a scheduled service from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG).

The flight was at cruising altitude at flight level FL370 (37,000 feet) when it experienced a sudden loss of cabin pressure.
Following a cabin pressurisation warning, flight crew initiated an emergency descent to 10,000 feet as per standard procedure.
The flight crew declared an emergency and decided to divert to Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX) following the depressurized descent.
Video footage from the passenger cabin shows the oxygen masks deployed as a result of the cabin depressurization event.
The flight was able to land at Kansai international Airport without further incident.

Flight data shows that flight JL8696 had made an on-time departure out of Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 1749 local time on 30 June.
Following departure, the flight had climbed to flight level FL370 for the north easterly service to Tokyo, Japan.
The aircraft was passing over Japan’s Kyushu island on flight plan track when the cabin depressurisation occurred.
The subsequent emergency descent to 10,000 feet was then made; taking approximately 10 minutes.
The aircraft conducting the JL8696 service from Shanghai was a Boeing 737-800, registered JA06GR. This is an 8.1 year old narrow body aircraft belonging to the subsidiary carrier Spring Airlines Japan.
It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in June 2017.
