United Airlines has commenced the rollout of Starlink internet on its regional aircraft. This ambitious project a significant leap forward in inflight connectivity.

The airline aims to equip over 40 regional aircraft monthly, starting in May and continuing through 2025.

The high speed internet service sets a new standard for US regional air travel.

The airline recently unveiled the intricacies of its Starlink installation process, highlighting the substantial technical advantages of the system.

Notably, the compact size and lightweight design of the Starlink equipment contribute to a more streamlined and efficient installation and maintenance process.

United Airlines aims to equip over 40 regional aircraft monthly, starting in May and continuing through 2025. This rapid deployment is made possible by the remarkably short installation time of approximately eight hours, This is a tenfold improvement compared to traditional inflight Wi-Fi systems.

Regional Fleet Upgrade Timeline

United’s commitment to upgrading its fleet is evident in its goal to outfit its entire two-cabin regional fleet by the end of this year, with plans to extend Starlink to its entire fleet in the future.

Grant Milstead, United’s VP of Digital Technology further explained the speed of the system upgrade. “Our ability to roll-out this innovative service with unprecedented speed and scale is a direct result of the advanced equipment, technology and team of experts at United.”

“Starlink has been a terrific partner. Our combined spirit of innovation and collaboration will enable us to hit our goal of more than 300 regional aircraft installations before the end of this year.”

The benefits of Starlink extend beyond enhanced passenger connectivity. The system’s design offers significant operational advantages:

Reduced Downtime: United’s planes are out of service for just four days for Starlink installation. This includes the removal of existing equipment, testing, and necessary aircraft modifications. This is significantly less than the 10+ days required for other inflight providers.

Lightweight Equipment: The complete Starlink installation kit weighs a mere 85 pounds, a stark contrast to other systems that can weigh up to 300 pounds. This reduced weight simplifies transportation and installation.

Simplified Installation: The streamlined equipment facilitates a straightforward installation process. After removing the existing Wi-Fi system, technicians install the Starlink equipment. This involves an internal reinforcement structure, external antenna, and cabin wireless access points and power supply. Comprehensive system checks ensure optimal performance.

Increased Fuel Efficiency: The lightweight Starlink system contributes to improved fuel efficiency, reducing the aircraft’s operational costs.

Reliable Connectivity: Starlink’s weather-proofed inter-satellite laser link technology ensures consistent connectivity, regardless of weather conditions.

Seamless Coverage: The system’s vast, low-earth orbit satellite constellation provides reliable Wi-Fi coverage by constantly switching between satellites for optimal performance.

Summary

Passengers on Starlink-equipped regional aircraft can expect Wi-Fi speeds up to 250 Mbps, a significant upgrade from current regional aircraft speeds. This enhanced connectivity enables seamless streaming, browsing, and other online activities.

United Airlines is further enhancing the passenger experience by offering free Starlink access to all MileagePlus® customers. This includes access to a range of inflight entertainment options, such as streaming services, shopping, and gaming.

United’s adoption of Starlink represents a significant advancement in regional air travel. The airline’s commitment to innovation and collaboration is poised to redefine the future of inflight connectivity.
