Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL), a pioneer of UK electric aviation, has released its 2024 Annual Report. The past year’s efforts saw Vertical make significant strides in its ambitious Flightpath 2030 strategy.
The report, coupled with commentary from CEO Stuart Simpson, shows the company rapidly advancing towards its goal of revolutionizing urban air mobility.
Simpson emphasized the pivotal nature of 2024, highlighting a number of important waypoints. It saw the launch of the Flightpath 2030 strategy, the progression of piloted flight testing, and a strengthened financial foundation.
“2024 was a year of major progress for Vertical,” he stated. It underscored the company’s commitment to delivering the “safest and most versatile aircraft” in the burgeoning eVTOL sector.
Flightpath 2030 and Financial Strength
At the heart of Vertical’s progress lies the Flightpath 2030 strategy, a roadmap designed to achieve certification, production, and financial milestones. The goal is to solidify the company’s market leadership by the decade’s end.
This strategic vision is underpinned by a robust financial restructuring, including the conversion of $130 million in debt to equity through an agreement with Mudrick Capital.
This move, alongside a successful $90 million upsized raise, including significant investment from new backers, reinforces Vertical’s financial stability and positions it for sustained growth.
Furthermore, Vertical has strategically bolstered its leadership team. Firstly, there was the re-appointment of Dómhnal Slattery as Chair. It also saw the addition of Eamonn Brennan, former Director General of Eurocontrol, as a Board Advisor.
This injects invaluable regulatory expertise into the company’s governance. These strategic appointments are crucial as Vertical navigates the complex certification process.
Prototype Development and Piloted Flight Testing
The development of Vertical’s full-scale prototypes has reached a critical stage. GKN Aerospace’s Global Technology Centre is building the third aircraft, following the completion of the second prototype.
Having two piloted assets enables more data collection and informs the design of the certification aircraft.
Piloted flight testing has yielded impressive results. The second VX4 prototype commenced flight tests in July 2024, achieving piloted thrustborne testing in February 2025.

This achievement places Vertical Aerospace among the select few companies globally to accomplish this feat with a full-scale vectored thrust eVTOL.
Over 30 piloted test flights have been conducted, generating a staggering 5 million data points across 35,000 parameters.
These data points serve to validate engineering models and assess system performance, ensuring the aircraft’s reliability and stability.
Successful hover and low-speed maneuvers, including roll, yaw, and spot-turns, have exceeded performance expectations.
Vertical is now preparing for piloted wingborne flight, a milestone that, if achieved, would represent a world first for this type of electric aircraft.

CAA Certification Progress
Vertical’s progress in certification is equally noteworthy. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has expanded the scope of Vertical’s Design Organisation Approval (DOA), a crucial prerequisite for European Type Certification.
Furthermore, the CAA has agreed to certification cooperation with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
This collaborative approach streamlines the certification process and reinforces Vertical’s commitment to meeting stringent safety standards.
The next phase of testing, wingborne flight, requires CAA approval to extend the Permit to Fly. This transition marks a significant step towards commercial viability. It essentially moves the aircraft from a controlled test environment to more dynamic operational scenarios.
Completing wingborne flight will essentially constitute a “mini-certification” process, demonstrating the prototype’s readiness for further regulatory scrutiny.

Looking Ahead
The Vertical Aerospace 2024 Annual Report highlights a year of substantial progress and strategic growth.
With a clear vision, robust financial backing, and significant technological advancements, Vertical is well-positioned to take a lead role in the eVTOL market.
